Khun Khan National Park

The terrain consists of complex mountain ranges with elevations ranging from 500 to 1,708 meters above sea level, covering an area of approximately 397 square kilometers. This area spans Samoeng and Mae Chaem districts. The forest landscape of the national park comprises five types of forests:

  • Montane forests are found on mountains at elevations of 1,000 meters and above, primarily in the upper parts of the area and along the mountain range dividing Samoeng and Mae Chaem districts. Common tree species include oak, three-needled pine, Taloh, Tummein, Indian gooseberry, champaca, wild mangosteen, Sarapee, and Milkwood pine.
  • Dry evergreen forests are commonly found in valleys and along streams at elevations of 600 to 1,000 meters. The tree species present include Yang, Hopea (Ironwood), wild mango, wild longan, rambai, and fig trees.
  • Pine forests are found on mountain peaks at elevations of 700 to 1,300 meters. The tree species present include two-needled pine, three-needled pine, oak, lacquer tree, Shorea (Siamese sal), and Dipterocarpus obtusifolius.”
  • Mixed deciduous forests are found in the eastern part of the area. Tree species include teak, Tem, Indian elm, Saow, redwood, Burma padauk, Siamese cassia, and Ma Fan.
  • Dry dipterocarp forests are commonly found on low-lying mountains. Tree species include Teng, Rang, Dipterocarpus obtusifolius, Shorea, two-needled pine, olive, Saow, and Siamese cassia.
  • Common wildlife includes barking deer, wild boar, jungle fowl, porcupine, dhole, fox, pangolin, mole, squirrel, hare, colugo, bat, civet, and mongoose. Less common wildlife includes monkeys, gibbons, tigers, serows, and hornbills.

Activity

  • Several waterfalls, including Maena Peh Waterfall, Huai Tad Waterfall, Huai Hom Waterfall, and Amlong Waterfall, are located along the riverside nature study trail.
  • A natural hot spring located right at the park office, with water temperatures around 38 degrees Celsius.
  • Tham Luang Mae Sa, a two-level cave measuring 150 meters, is filled with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. The cave walls are adorned with beautiful patterns created by nature, and it also serves as a habitat for thousands of bats.
