This site was once the first capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom during the 19th Buddhist century (approximately the 14th century AD) and was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The park contains over 200 ancient monuments both inside and outside the city walls, including Wat Mahathat, Wat Si Chum, Wat Sa Si, and Wat Si Sawai, which all reflect the former prosperity of the Sukhothai Kingdom.
